Protect your property from standing water, erosion, and drainage problems with professional drainage solutions from Red Oak Landscaping. We install French drains, downspout drainage systems, swales, and dry creek beds to help manage water and protect your landscape.
Where land is flat, soils are dense, or the water table is high, having a well-designed drainage system is a priority. Without proper drainage solutions in place, water may collect to undermine structures and drown plants, turning parts of your landscape into perpetually wet swamps. Drainage also causes issues with your home and hardscaping such as sidewalks, decks, driveways, and patios. We use tried and true methods to manage water and eliminate it as a threat to your home.
Because we have years of experience, we know it is often not just one factor that contributes to drainage issues. Shade, water flow, gutter placement, and poor soils can all come into play. We examine all the existing conditions to develop a solution to your erosion or drainage issues that you will be satisfied with for years to come.
Drainage has been an issue we have been solving for clients for decades. In many cases we replaced the work of other companies that failed too early due to lack of focus on drainage. It can be a simple fix such as running downspouts in PVC (not corrugated) pipe to get water away from the house and landscaping to more complex solutions like dry creeks, grading swales, and installing French drains. Proper drainage solutions can not only provide longevity for your landscape and hardscape projects but can also take pressure off your foundation and prevent current or future leaking into the basement. We are not foundation specialists; however, we have been able to stop water from coming in by making corrections outside the house that were more cost effective than the high price of foundation work.
If a drainage solution is your primary concern or you are thinking of another project around the exterior of your home, let one of our experienced estimators review your property with you to come up with a plan that fits your needs and budget.
Downspouts – running downspouts a minimum of 10’ from the house where possible alleviates the pressure on your foundation caused by saturated soil. We use only PVC piping for this and install clean-outs and pop-up emitters with a gravel base to allow full drainage of the pipe, preventing freeze damage in the winter and stagnant water in the summer. Using black plastic pipe is not recommended as this product will fail, allowing soil and roots to infiltrate the pipe and prevent proper drainage—and this pipe cannot be serviced effectively if there ever is a clog.
Swales – in many cases the best remedy is to manage the water that moves through your property. Correcting grade and using swales to achieve this can be a very cost-effective drainage solution. We cannot control how the water gets to your property but proper management of it as it moves through can prevent headaches down the road and make your yard more usable after rainfall.
Dry Creek – like swales, dry creeks are a way to manage water as it moves from point A to point B. They serve an elevated purpose to a swale in that if the water flow is high, or growing grass is not possible to keep soil in place, a properly installed dry creek will allow a high volume of water with zero erosion. There are also aesthetic benefits from a dry creek by landscaping around it to make it look like a natural feature of your property. We can design dry creeks for many budget ranges and give you peace of mind knowing that the water moving through your property will not cause damage or erosion.
French drains – for difficult areas French drains are highly effective at capturing and moving both active water during a storm or standing water after a storm. French drains are constructed differently depending on the problem, and not all French drains are created equal. We recommend that you educate yourself about the process before choosing a contractor for this work. We often see what people were told are French drains that were not designed properly to solve the issue and often fail or clog quickly (if they work at all). When you schedule an appointment with one of our estimators, they can go over our process for French drains and show why Red Oak can create a lasting solution for your drainage problem.
Water is essential for a healthy landscape, but when it collects in the wrong places, it can quickly become a serious problem for your property. Standing water, soggy lawns, soil erosion, and poor drainage can damage landscaping, create unusable areas in your yard, and even contribute to moisture problems around your home's foundation. At Red Oak Landscaping, we provide professional yard drainage solutions throughout St. Louis and the surrounding communities, helping homeowners and businesses manage excess water and protect their properties from costly damage. With over 30 years of experience solving drainage problems in the St. Louis area, we understand how Missouri's dense clay soils, heavy rainfall, uneven terrain, and changing seasonal conditions can affect the way water moves through your property. Whether you're dealing with a constantly wet backyard, water pooling near your foundation, or erosion washing away parts of your landscape, our team can design and install a drainage system that addresses the underlying problem. We know that effective landscape drainage involves much more than simply digging a trench or installing a pipe. Water problems are often caused by a combination of factors, including improper grading, compacted soil, gutter placement, surrounding terrain, shaded areas, and the natural flow of stormwater. That's why we begin by evaluating your property's existing conditions and identifying where the water is coming from, how it moves through your yard, and where it can be safely redirected. Rather than recommending the same solution for every property, we develop a drainage plan based on your specific needs, property layout, and budget. Our goal is to address the source of your drainage issues and create a practical, long-lasting solution that helps protect your home, landscaping, and outdoor living areas. One of the most common drainage problems we encounter involves downspouts releasing large amounts of water directly beside a home's foundation. When rainwater repeatedly saturates the soil around your house, it can increase moisture pressure against foundation walls and contribute to water entering basements. Our downspout drainage solutions are designed to carry roof runoff away from your home and landscaping to an appropriate discharge location. Whenever site conditions allow, we aim to extend downspout drainage at least 10 feet away from the foundation. We use durable PVC piping rather than flexible black corrugated pipe because properly installed PVC offers a more dependable, serviceable solution. Our installations can include accessible cleanouts, pop-up emitters, and gravel drainage bases to help water discharge properly, reduce standing water inside the system, and minimize maintenance concerns. In many cases, properly managing roof runoff can significantly reduce drainage problems around the home without requiring extensive landscaping changes. For properties experiencing surface water runoff or erosion, we also design and install drainage swales and dry creek beds. Swales are carefully graded channels that help direct rainwater through your property along a controlled path, preventing it from collecting in unwanted areas. They can be an effective and economical solution for yards where water naturally flows from neighboring properties or higher elevations. When water flow is particularly heavy or grass cannot adequately protect the soil from erosion, a professionally installed dry creek bed may be the better option. Dry creek beds use strategically placed stone and proper grading to create a stable drainage channel capable of handling concentrated runoff while adding a natural, attractive feature to your landscape. With thoughtful design and complementary landscaping, a dry creek bed can turn a troublesome drainage area into an appealing part of your outdoor space. We also specialize in French drain installation for properties where standing water, saturated soil, or persistent wet spots are difficult to eliminate through surface grading alone. French drains are designed to collect excess water below the surface and redirect it away from problem areas. However, not all French drains are constructed the same way, and improper installation can lead to clogged pipes, inadequate water collection, and drainage problems that return shortly after the work is completed. Our experienced team evaluates the conditions of your property to determine the appropriate drain location, depth, materials, and discharge method. We take the time to design each French drain system around the actual drainage issue rather than relying on a generic installation approach. Over the years, we've helped customers correct drainage systems that were improperly designed or installed by other contractors, and we've seen firsthand how important it is to address water management before beginning other landscaping or hardscaping projects. Proper drainage can help extend the life of patios, retaining walls, walkways, and landscape installations while reducing the risk of erosion and water accumulation around your property. Although we're not foundation repair specialists, our exterior drainage solutions have helped homeowners address water intrusion concerns by improving how rainwater is managed outside the home. Whether you need a simple downspout extension, a French drain, a dry creek bed, or a more comprehensive yard drainage system, we're here to help you find the right solution.
